Mississauga Ontario - A place to visit and enjoy.

Come to Mississauga soon.  With Lakefront for miles including beautiful Port Credit where restaurants abound and music plays around the parks near the lakefront and quaint shopping exists along the main street, it is so much fun.

Early years of Mississauga
It was in the early 1700’s that the first activity was recorded regarding the settlement of Mississauga and surrounding areas.  A breakaway branch of the Ojibwas, who had been living around Lake Huron, ventured south to Lake Ontario and the mouth of the Credit River. The Mississaugas, as they became known, populated areas from here over to Burlington Bay.  For the next hundred years trading activity was prevalent between the Ojibwas and the French and British, which ultimately led to the signing of a treaty with the British Crown acceding 75,000 acres of land to the Crown by the Ojibwas/Mississaugas for settlement known as the “Mississauga Purchase”. The area up to what is now known as Eglinton Ave., became the Credit Indian Reserve Settlement, (later to become Port Credit), was swift and led to the next event known as “The Second Purchase”.  In the Second Purchase 600,000 acres of land were acquired by the British Crown and for the most part represents what is known today as Peel Region.  In 1847 the Mississaugas moved on to Hagersville, an area near Brantford where they resettled.

During the period of acquisition by the Crown, settlements began to spring up and emerge. Hamlets of Dixie, Merigold’s Point where Warren Clarkson arrived and began to build his businesses and settle what is now Clarkson along-side the arrival of the railway.  Erindale, known early on as Toronto, was established around 1825.  As it grew through the years, many name changes occurred such as Springfield and finally became known as Erindale after founder Reverend James McGrath's homeland of Ireland. (Erin is a poetic nickname of Ireland).

Nearby, Cooksville popped up first named Harrisville in 1808, and by 1820, Jacob Cook had become one of the foremost developers of business in the area where he also began the operation of the stagecoach service for travel and mail, and established a major inn at the corner of Hurontario and Dixie Rd.  Cooksville was born by 1836.

Eventually Meadowvale, (village status in 1819) emerged and the arrival of Francis Silverthorn marked the beginning of the village's boom lasting into the early 20th century.   Today Meadowvale boasts its status as a Heritage Conservation District, the first one established by the Ontario government.

Streetsville, so named after Timothy Street, was founded in 1819 and today it still hosts the Bread and Honey Festival which was probably initiated by the historical large flour mills that defined the area.  Port Credit was the area that was the focal point of development in the purchased area and in 1834 Port Credit was finally surveyed and planned for the construction of the harbour we loosely see today. Its name was derived from the method of trade and payment with the native tribes.

Mississauga became a town in 1968 and was designated a city in 1974 taking many of the villages around the founding area within  its incorporation.
