Spring Wasp Control

By July 8, 2023No Comments

Wasps can be major pests, ruining your outdoor events and causing anxiety. Wasp control during the late Summer and Fall can be difficult because the nest grows quickly during the warmer months. Wasp control in the Spring, however, can be extremely valuable because if you eliminate the queen before she builds her nest, the colony will not develop any further.

How do wasps overwinter?

During the fall, the queen wasp will mate and then find a place to overwinter. She will typically choose places like rotting logs, under tree bark, in soil, or under leaf litter. The rest of the colony will die off. Wasps will not colonize old nests, so you can safely knock down nests during the winter. When Spring comes, the queen will start looking for a place to build a new nest. Popular spots for wasp nests include: under eaves on houses, around porches, under deck railings, inside wall and attic voids, and around outbuildings.

How do you remove wasp nests?

If the wasp nest is still small, it can often be easily removed. Though it is recommended to have a professional remove wasp nests, if you want to proceed on your own, always approach the nest in the morning or evening when the wasps are less active. Give the nest a good spray using an aerosol wasp spray, and then back away quickly. Leave the nest alone for the night and approach it again the next day. If there is still activity around the nest, repeat as necessary. If the activity has stopped, it is probably safe to remove the nest. Individuals who are sensitive/allergic to wasp stings should not try to remove a wasp nest on their own.
