Common Brampton Roaches

By July 8, 2023No Comments

Roaches are nasty little critters that can spread germs, contaminate food, cause allergies, and contribute to asthma. There are over 3,500 different species of roaches in the world, but thankfully, in Brampton there are only 4 main pest species that we must deal with.  Understanding the different species and what they look like can help you identify and get rid of the problem quickly.

German Cockroaches

The German cockroach is the most common roach found in homes, apartments, restaurants, and other businesses. They are a small species (13 – 16 mm long) that are usually light brown or tan in color. One of the easiest ways to identify German cockroaches is by the 2 dark, horizontal stripes located behind the head. German roaches have wings, but they prefer just to run very fast.

American Cockroaches

American roaches are very large compared to German roaches. They can be from 2.5 cm to over 5 cm long and are reddish-brown in color. American cockroaches have wings and will fly when they want to. They prefer to be outdoors in warmer climates and will enter homes to escape cold weather. Indoors they are most often found in dark, moist areas like bathrooms, basements, under sinks, and in laundry rooms.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental roaches are another fairly large roach, measuring in at 1.8 – 2.5 cm long. They are also sometimes known as waterbugs because they like very moist environments like sewers, drains, and under leaves or mulch. Oriental roaches are dark brown or black in color and appear shiny or greasy. They usually stay outdoors but may enter homes during extreme weather and can be found in damp areas.

Brown-banded Cockroaches

The last common roach in Brampton is the brown-banded roach. They are the smallest of the pest roaches at only 10-14 mm long. Brown-banded roaches get their name from the light brown bands across their wings and abdomen. Brown-banded roaches need less moisture than all the other species and prefer warm, dry areas. This means that they are commonly found in heated houses and will venture into bedrooms and living rooms. They can readily infest furniture, electronics, wall decorations, pantry goods, and more.
