Do You Have Bed Bugs? Here's How to Tell

bed bugs removal

Bed bugs are masters at hiding and by the time most Toronto residents are certain they have them, the infestation is already well established. Here are the five signs to look for right now:

  • Bites on Your Skin – Small, red, and often itchy bumps appearing in a straight line or cluster, especially after waking up.
  • Blood Stains on Bedding – Tiny smears or spots of blood can appear on sheets, pillowcases, or mattress covers.
  • Live Bugs or Shed Skins – Finding adult bed bugs, baby bugs (nymphs), or their molted skins around your mattress or furniture.
  • Rusty or Dark Spots – Bed bug excrement leaves small, dark stains on mattresses, walls, or furniture.
  • A Musty, Sweet Odor – A strong, unfamiliar smell often signals a heavy infestation of bed bugs.

Bed bug reports in Toronto have risen significantly since 2020, with multi-unit buildings particularly affected. High-traffic environments, such as condo laundry rooms, Airbnb rentals, and even TTC seating, are common transmission points. Toronto Public Health confirms bed bugs are consistently among the city’s most reported pest complaints.

DIY Vs. Calling A Professional: The Honest Answer

Store-bought sprays can suppress surface activity temporarily, but they do not reach eggs hidden deep inside mattresses, wall voids, or furniture joints. If you’ve spotted signs in more than one area of your home, or if bites have continued for more than two weeks, a professional treatment is the only reliable path to complete elimination.

The Rise of Bed Bugs in Toronto

Bed Bug Extermination Pre-Prep Checklist

  • Remove every layer from each bed in the affected and adjoining room sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, duvet covers, and decorative pillows. Do not carry loose bedding through the home, as this can spread bed bugs to clean areas.
  • Empty all drawers, nightstands, closets, and wardrobes in bedrooms where activity has been spotted. Place garments, scarves, belts, and fabric accessories into sealed plastic bags. Our technician directs access to the cracks and joints where bed bugs harbour.
  • Remove framed pictures, mirrors, posters, and tapestries from bedroom walls. Take down drapery and curtain panels as well. Bed bugs commonly hide behind these items and along curtain folds, so exposing the walls is essential for a thorough treatment.
  • Sort through items stored in the affected rooms and dispose of anything you no longer need in outdoor garbage bins. The fewer hiding places available, the more effective the treatment will be. Remaining items should be sealed in plastic bags and left in place for treatment.
  • If your mattress or box spring currently has a plastic or zippered encasement, take it off before our visit. These covers can trap bed bugs underneath and prevent treatment products from reaching the areas where they nest.
  • Pull out all boxes, bins, shoes, and miscellaneous items stored beneath beds. Either discard them in outdoor bins or seal them in bags and leave them in the room for treatment. Bed bugs frequently nest in undisturbed spaces directly below sleeping areas.
  • Run a vacuum over all floors, baseboards, mattress seams, and upholstered furniture in the affected rooms. Once finished, immediately remove the vacuum bag, seal it in a plastic bag, and place it in an outdoor garbage bin. If your vacuum is bagless, empty the canister into a sealed bag outdoors and wipe the interior with a damp cloth.
  • Cover fish tanks completely and turn off filtration and air pumps before treatment. Remove pet food dishes and water bowls from the floor. All pets, including birds and reptiles, must be relocated to an untreated area or taken off the premises for the duration of service.
  • Everyone in the household, along with all pets, must vacate the treated unit after our technician has completed the service. Your technician will confirm the exact re-entry time based on the treatment method used.

How We Eliminate Bed Bugs: Our Proven 3-Step Process

bed-bug-treatment-toronto-1-1-1

Step 1: Thorough Inspection (60–90 minutes)

Every job begins with a detailed, room-by-room inspection carried out by one of our licensed technicians. We check all primary harborage zones: mattress seams and box springs, bed frames and headboards, nightstands and dressers, sofa joints, baseboards, electrical outlets, and any luggage or clothing items flagged by the resident. By the end of the inspection, you’ll know exactly where the infestation is, how far it has spread, and what treatment approach is recommended — with a transparent cost estimate before any work begins.

Step 2: Heat Treatment (6–8 Hours)

Thermal bed bug treatment is the most effective elimination method available. Our industrial-grade heating equipment raises the temperature of the treated space to 50°C and above — a temperature that is lethal to bed bugs at every life stage, including eggs, nymphs, and adults.

Unlike sprays, heat penetrates deep into mattresses, inside wall voids, behind baseboards, and through furniture — reaching every hiding spot in the room. The treatment is maintained at lethal temperature for 6 to 8 hours, with our technicians monitoring heat distribution throughout to eliminate any cold spots. There is no chemical resistance to heat — bed bugs cannot survive it. In the majority of cases, a single heat treatment session achieves complete elimination.

Step 3: Chemical Backup + Follow-Up

Where required particularly in severe or multi-room infestations, we apply a targeted residual chemical treatment as a secondary barrier. This is applied to crack and crevice areas, along baseboards, and behind fixtures using Ministry of Environment-approved products.

Residents are advised to stay out of treated areas for 4 hours following chemical application. A follow-up inspection is scheduled within the guarantee period to confirm elimination and provide residual protection against any re-activity.

Bed Bug Treatment: Laundry Instructions

  • When you arrive at the washing machine, open each sealed plastic bag and tip the contents straight into the drum. Do not sort or shake out items beforehand, this prevents bed bugs or eggs from falling onto clean surfaces. Throw the empty bag into an outdoor bin immediately.
  • Select the highest water temperature that your clothing and linens can tolerate. Hot water is critical because it kills bed bugs at every life stage. Check garment care labels, but when in doubt, err on the side of higher heat, eliminating the infestation takes priority over preserving a single item.
  • Transfer everything to the dryer and run it at the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. The sustained temperature is what destroys any surviving bugs and eggs. Delicate items that cannot be washed may still be placed in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes as a stand-alone disinfection step.
  • Stuffed toys, handbags, backpacks, duffel bags, and fabric shoes that cannot go through a full wash cycle can be disinfected by tumbling them in the dryer on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Items too bulky for a household dryer should be taken to a commercial laundromat with industrial-sized machines.
  • As soon as laundry is finished, place the clean, dry items into brand-new plastic bags and seal them shut. Do not reuse the bags that hold the contaminated items. Store the sealed bags away from any rooms that are still being treated.
  • All washed and dried belongings must remain sealed inside their fresh bags until your technician confirms the infestation has been completely resolved. Opening bags early or returning items to untreated furniture risks re-contamination and can undo the progress of the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I stay in my home during heat treatment?

No! residents, children, and pets must vacate the property for the full duration of the heat treatment, typically 6 to 8 hours. We’ll give you a confirmed re-entry time before we begin.

Our technician conducts a post-treatment inspection before you re-enter. We check for any remaining live activity and document findings. If any activity is detected within your 6-month guarantee window, we return at no cost.

Yes, this is one of the most common scenarios we see in Toronto. Bed bugs can travel through shared walls, electrical conduits, and hallway carpeting. If your neighbour has had bed bugs, a professional inspection of your unit is strongly recommended even if you have no symptoms yet.

Heat treatment uses high temperatures to kill bed bugs at all life stages, including eggs in a single session with no chemical residue. Chemical treatment uses insecticide sprays and baits and typically requires 2 to 3 visits. Heat treatment is our primary recommendation for most Toronto infestations due to its superior effectiveness and speed.
